How to Make Pain Suisse

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Then, add warm milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until a rough dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-10 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic but still slightly tacky.
  • Roll out the kneaded dough into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Cut the dough into squares or rectangles, placing a spoonful of filling in the center.
  • Place the shaped pastries on a lined baking sheet, cover with a towel, and allow to rise for 30-60 minutes until puffed up.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Brush the tops of the pastries with an egg wash and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remove the pastries from the oven, let cool for a few minutes, and serve warm.
